Even swap at the stealership?

Hi, trying to get out of my Subaru and into a Toyota. I know dealerships are out to gouge you…but they have most of the cars unfortunately.

I’m thinking about trading in my 2017 Subaru Outback Limited (48,000mi-average condition) for a 2016 Toyota Avalon XLE (78,000mi) listed at $19,800.

I’m thinking that’s an upgrade (if checks out with my mechanic), and it should be a pretty even swap, maybe even a few bucks should come my way.

Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated- Thanks

So first of all price your Outback through places like Carmax, Carvana, Vroom, etc. since usually they pay more than dealerships. You're saying average condition which can mean different things, but from a quick general search on the used car websites your Outback should be worth considerably more than the Avalon unless average condition means enough issues that would really reduce its value.

And yes dealerships charge more for used cars than for example private party. So yeah first see what offers you get for your Outback then make the decision. Based on offers you get it might be more worth it to buy a new Toyota or Honda instead (sedan or suv).

Makes sense, been focusing on new- just so expensive now and thought maybe this was an alternative. It seems like a lot of people believe 2022’s may not stand the test of time as well as a bit older model. Thanks

You can still buy new at msrp (which is a good deal in this market) especially if you buy from allocation (put deposit on an incoming unit and wait for it to arrive rather than buying on the lot unit). And as far as 2022's not lasting I'm not sure who the "a lot of people" you are referring to are, but brand new Camry or Corolla, Rav4, cr-v, etc. are very good cars and can last very long time.

Guaranteed that the dealer will find a way to screw you.

I know, but it would be fun to find a way to beat them at their own game…it seems like private sellers think they can ask dealer prices now too.

This is true. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Avalons are great cars and that is not an outrageous price in this market. If you can determine that the car has been well maintained and not wrecked, see how low you can get them. Be willing to walk away since you don't actually need the car. As already stated, see what you can get for the Subaru outside of the dealership. Good luck.
