Feeling a jerk when shifting from Park

Hai Scotty,

When I shift from Park to gear (both R and D), as my car is in uphill or downhill, I can feel some strain or jerk in the vehicle. Is it normal or can I do something to avoid it. I have Honda Accord 2015 LX with 134000 kms.

Thank you.

Sounds normal.  What does uphill or downhill have to do with it?  Does it do the same thing on level ground?

No , when I park it on a slope it happens...

Is it normal

Of course. In drive gear, the engine is trying to propel the vehicle forward.

If you’re stoped by jamming your differential (something I don’t advise doing, you should be stopped using your parking brake with the parking pawl as a backup)- then you are going to feel the parking pawl disengagement and your differential being able to spin again.

(Link to a pic showing how that works)

If you aren’t jamming your diff/out put shaft (by not letting your car roll in P until it locks up and using the parking brake) - then no it’s usually not normal.

On most cars, for most drivers, shift shock when shifting from P usually means you need to replace your ATF.

Thanks
