hello to whoever reads this! thanks for all the tips on YouTube Scott; I've got a 1992 automatic MX5 Mazda Miata 196,866 miles on it rebuilt transmission but I use it everyday QUESTION is please I was wondering what is the name of the device used to scan this vehicle I have because everywhere I take it for a diagnostic scan the mechanics they'll say, "SORRY 1993 and farther back I CANT SCAN" and since I dont know any savagescotty type mechanics around here I was hoping I could get some knowledge on that device and if any specifics youd recommend?
Not sure you can do a diagnostic scan on that vehicle (which has OBDI), but you can check for OBDI codes. For that see below:

The mechanics are right.
The Scan Tool standard is called OBDII, on board diagnostic 2. It became standard in 1996ish.
In 1992, even though cars might have On Board Diagnostics, they weren’t yet OBDII. Each car maker had their own set of standards and own set of protocols that weren’t compatible with each other.
You are left with two alternatives:
1) Find a scan tool that is specifically made for your car, which is hard to come by.
2) You’ll have to do diagnostic the old fashioned way, without a scan tool.
You can also use the Miata equivalent of the bmw stomp test. Jump the diag pins and you can read out the codes you got. This should help:
