I recently purchase a 2010 Rav 4, 4 cyclinder, automatic transmission with 160,000 miles on it. The car fax report does not indicate that any transmission service was done on the vehicle. I checked the fluid color, it is somewhat pinkish, but definitely not new. My question is, I would like to do a drain and fill of the transmission fluid, but at this point is it a good idea, or am I just asking for trouble? I am planning on saving the old just in case (at least for a while). I would the car to last up to 300,000 miles.
See the FAQ.
@chucktobias Not really asking if I should transmission fluid, more asking for opinions if it is a good idea at 160,000 with no previous record of fluid change.
Our FAQ covers this in detail.
This is taken directly from our FAQ : "If your transmission does not have advanced mileage ( <150k miles ), the fluid looks fairly clean, and it has not exhibited any of the above symptoms, then you should continue to service it. Neglecting to maintain a healthy transmission (or any machine) will guarantee that it will fail sooner. If you are uncertain, then service the transmission, but pour the fluid that you drain out in a clean container, and keep it on your shelf."asking for opinions
