Fix my 2000 Honda Odyssey or junk it?

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey with 128k miles. I just went for my annual NY inspection and they said that I need new control arms on both sides ($375 a piece) and also that my valve cover gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced ($400). I haven't noticed and steering problems or oil leaks. The car has been having some transmission issues on cold mornings, taking some time to "hook up" but once warm, after a minute or two of driving it's fine. My wife wants me to get rid of it and buy something newer, but I don't think it makes sense yet since the used car market is so expensive right now. I'm thinking to pay another shop to take a look to get a second opinion, and then get the items repaired if necessary, or go ahead and replace the van. Thanks for your input!

Sounds like a sensible plan.

You shouldn't even need to pay to just get an estimate.

I am generally always inclined to fix what I have rather than go $40,000 into debt on a new(r) vehicle that is of lesser quality than the one I have.

Not familiar with your car but replacing a valve cover gasket should be a relatively easy job and no where close to $400 to fix. If the car's suspension feels good to you, I'd let it go as some shops say to replace front end parts based solely on mileage.

Not a mechanic, just a driver.
