[Solved] Ford Focus weird throttle pedal

hi Scotty,

I own a 2014 Ford Focus 1.6 dual clutch automatic.

Pressing the pedal lightly doesn’t cause the engine revs to change. Only when I push about 10-15% the car and begins accelerating as any car would if you’d suddenly hit the gas 10-15%.

I couldn’t find a way to adjust the pedal… is there a way to make the gas pedal work more smoothly?

Or maybe that’s just a weird side effect of the power shift?

You could try the throttle body relearn procedure. There's no adjustment for gas pedal itself, it is not a mechanical connection from the pedal to throttle body, it's electronic. Basically the gas pedal is a variable resistor. But given it's age, it's probably has developed a dead spot and on it's way out.

Lookup throttle position relearn procedure for your car. Also Ford had alot of problems with the transmissions in those, they had recalls for transmission and I believe a buyback program for your car.

Thank you for responding.
On the topic of fords troublesome tranny, There was a time where I worked in fixing these.
These trannies were rushed to market, it’s fascinating to read about what went inside of Ford and their disregard for human safety, the consumers, and how they faked official documents

Funnily enough, somehow other cars that used the same DPS6 transmission (Smart, Renault GrandCoupè) actually drove a lot better so I believe that the actual issue is with the engine mass or the electrical system…

I have recently installed a new clutch assembly and adjusted the computer values.

I have a theory that this issue is called by faulty shift fork motors, (the system applying pressure on the clutch) but I do not know if I should spend $400 in parts alone on what seems to be a pretty minor issue…

Smart cars are so small, I don’t believe they weigh enough to strain a transmission, 🤣

Have you ever been in a 2020 smart? Those things are GO KARTS. At over 1 ton in weight with passengers inside they end up weighing more then a fiesta that also had issues with its ford dual clutch.

And the Renault Telisman and Koleos are defiantly enough to to strain the trannies

Further more, dual clutch trannies wear out THE SAME on both the Volvo S40 and XC60. The weight difference is huge but the wear is the same.

So I think your argument is invalid.

and on both of these these 6DCT250 don’t cause any issues. So trust me, that’s just very terrible engineering by ford.

Well it was more of a joke than an argument. As Arnold said “I have shoes bigger than this car.” Their size to weight ratio is definitely off compared to a Fiesta, but when you look at the crash testing videos between the two it becomes clear why it weighs more. The passenger compartment is much more stout on a Smart than a Fiesta.

Yeah, there’s nothing like a smart

I found this video of a smart in the US with the thoughts of someone who seems to never have driven a modern one.

Personally I think the best new small car is the Fiesta 1.5 turbo with 200 horsepower from the new Euro Focus.

I don’t like Ford Turbos, had way to many issues with that 1.5 L turbo in one I bought for my wife. Oil dilution big time. 3rd motor they installed in it their solution was to disconnect the turbo. Ran like a dog. And the lemon replacement car wasn’t much better.

Well, that’s interesting.

I still remember when ford made their engines with Mazda and they were better then their competition by a long shot.

My other car, a Volvo C30 “P.shift”, has the 2.0L Ford DuraTech with no VVT and I love that engine.

It’s sad how modern cars are really going downhill…

On what model did that happen?
I’d love to know more info.

2014 Fusion. They gave her a 2016 as a lemon replacement, at 21k miles the tires were bald, battery was dead within a year. The brakes have no wear indicators, the pads had about 1/4” left but the calipers at that point went past their designed travel and I had to replace one in front and one in the rear because they were leaking. And in 2018 there wasn’t many aftermarket calipers around for them. 325 for front, 265 for rear at the dealer. Oh and they wouldn’t cover it under warranty because the dealer said she wore the brake pads down to far. I had 1/4” above the rivets. I’ve seen people wear brakes down to the full metal and never have a caliper break from it. Bad design. According to their logic you gotta change pads at half life. Back brakes wore exactly the same as the front to. I’ll never buy another Ford car. And I used to be a Ford fan in the 80s and 90s. At least their Trucks hold up

Interesting, where I live we never had the fusion, we had the Mondeo with the 2.0 Ecoboost 205hp engine that ford used everywhere at the time…

It’s very interesting, cause the 2.0 was actually overall a reasonably well built engine. They would last for 120k miles usually without any serious issues…

I too really like ford, they almsot the only ones that sold affordable durable wagons where I live and have got a reputation for being workhorses and it’s sad to see them throw all of that down the toilet with those tiny turbo charged piles of garbage…

I’ll have your story in mind 🙂 thank you.
