Hey Scotty,

My mom has a 2017 ford fusion base ecoboost. Bought in 2020 with 33k miles one previous owner. Currently at about 90k miles. Car has been great without any major issues. She plans to pay it off but she is Interested in maybe buying another used Fusion. Once the current one is paid.

What are your thoughts on the Fusions?

She will have to buy another car, they don't make Ford Fusions anymore, you only buy them used, now.

I would pass, personally. Those tiny turbocharged engines wear out prematurely, unless you get one non-turbo with ordinary fuel injection. Only if she's the type who buys and sells cars frequently, and doesn't drive the stink out of them, it may be decent.

We have talked about this numerous times if you do a search on this forum. Pass on the Fusion.

If the Fusion engine is a Duratec 2.0 inline 4 cylinder, I would keep it.

If it is any EcoBoost engine, I would consider looking into a Honda or Toyota.

I'm pretty sure they used 2.5L engines for the non-turbos.

You are right. Typo. It is the 2.5L Duratec.

The one from Mazda?

I am pretty sure it is the Mazda one. TMK, the 4 cylinder Duratec were okay, but the 6 cylinder ones were the ones that had the water pump problems. LMK if I am incorrect on this, as I don’t want to lead the OP the wrong way!

I owned a 2015 Fusion SE before I traded it in for my current 2021 Camry SE. I must say that my 2015 Fusion was an extremely great and reliable car. I sold it at 120,000 miles and it never had any issues. A contributing factor would be my tendency to perform maintenance religiously. Oil change every 5k, transmission fluid change every 60k and all that good stuff.

It was funny when I found out a man lived a couple blocks away bought my 2015 Fusion from the dealership I sold it to for his college age son. Last time I saw them, the car had 144k miles and still no issues. Paint still in great condition, which kinda makes me jealous because the paint on my brand new Camry is so thin, I have had rock chips everywhere, but that's the only bad review I have about my Camry.

If I was in your mother's shoes, I would keep the Fusion until its wheels fall off which will take quite a long time.

Thanks to all. She loves the fusion. It's pretty much a commuter car. My mom hates long distance driving. She has kept up with maintenance doing an oil change/ servicing every 6 months.
