Scotty, my friend’s 2009 Nissan Versa with 100,000 miles on it came screeching to a hault the other day in the middle of the street. The front passenger wheel was sticking out and bent. A repair shop said that they would have to replace the entire axle plus the ball joint. They also are saying that there may be something wrong with the transmission, without explanation. Am I being scammed?

Sounds about right
that's what happens when you ignore that squeaking sound coming from your suspension for too long.

Unfortunately, 100K miles is about right for one of those to self-destruct. The Versa is basically a back-door Renault (same platform as the Renault Mégane).
