I have 2003 Nissan Frontier 96k miles and had the Manual Transmission gear oil changed today and I think they put GL-5 instead of the GL-4 it is supposed to have. Is this going to ruin my Transmission and how long do I have to have the right oil put in before it damages it.
Oh, it's not going to ruin your transmission and the short run there isn't all that much difference in. It's just splash lubrication. But I would drain it and fill it whenever you get a chance
Thank you
Going to Nissan Monday to have it corrected, I tired but I am a little disabled and can not get the leverage to get the inset screws out middle of the transmission without it on a Lift.
The weight of the gear oil is more important than the grade for non-combustion applications.
Not so, The GL-5 has sulfur that can ruin my brass or bronze synchros,
The GL-4 is supposed to be put in my particular Manual Transmission for that reason as it doesn't have the sulfur
It depends on the construction of the transmission. If you have cupric synchromesh rings, then yes. The additives in GL-5, such as sulfur, phosphorus, etc will attack them. You best bet is to just follow your manufacture instruction manual. Use the exact oil it tells you to use.
I told them this and I already had the right gear oil but they would not use it.
Now I am going to Nissan Monday to have them put the right oil as I have. I already talked with Nissan about this and another mechanic and I already knew that the Firestone store bought and put the wrong oil in. They are just stubborn about it and hurt their feeling that I know what my manual says it needs in my Nissan Buyer specs.
Going to Nissan or Firestone is a recipe for disaster @jrcarnut. You should find an independent mechanic if you want your vehicle to survive.
