Full synthetic oil for old/high mileage engine

Hello Scotty, I drive 2007 Honda CR-V with 195,000 miles. My owner's manual recommends 5W-20 oil for the engine. It also says "You may use a synthetic motor oil if it meets the same requirements given for a conventional motor oil: it displays the API certification seal, and it is the proper weight". Now, my mechanic suggests higher viscosity oil like 5W-30 oil and discourages using synthetic oil for my engine. He thinks that higher viscosity oil uses the space created by wear and tear of the old engine. I personally feel that my engine runs smoother in full synthetic oil. What do you think?

Many brands offer a high mileage version of synthetic 5W-20 oil.
