I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. Approximately 112,000 miles. Three times I have had trouble with it staying in gear. The second time was so bad I actually snapped/broke the shifter and had to have the mechanic replace the entire unit. When he did it was revealed that this was a common problem with this model. So much in fact the Ford moved the shifter from behind the wheel to the floor later. Just thought maybe you would like to warn your viewers about this.

The Mountaineer is actually a Ford Escape and the automatic transmission on these are weak with a lifetime of about 120k miles.
Turns out the cable link snapped. It is fixed now.
