Hello, I had question regarding if I should change the oil and filter on my 2008 Grand Marquis LS 80k, as I left for the Navy on August 5th and a day prior to me leaving my car was due for a oil change, I filled it with semi synthetic oil and put a new filter, then I left. The car would then be put into a storage and not be driven until this year of 2022 *1 year of not being driven* 1st week of July, I only drive the car for atleast 15-20 miles and then started working on my car to change all the dry rotted rubber, I finished my car and put it in storage again to go on a vacation and will be driving it in mid September, so all in all the car has only driven 15-20 miles within a span of 1 year and 2 months, just to add this info too I will actually start driving the car normally again but was curious to know if I should change the oil in it now before I drive it or it will be fine to reach 5k mile change. Thanks.
- The brand oil I use is motorcraft
The price of 100% synthetic is not much more than the blends. I would tend to use a blend in a really old car, 20 years plus since those cars were made for conventional oil. Your car is 14 years old and as such was probably designed with synthetic in mind. I tried a blend once in a car that had synthetic and the car started to smell like an old car that was burning oil. I went back to pure synthetic and the smell went away. I could not find any leaks but the smell was unmistakable. I think synthetic tends to not break down during long term storage where as conventional does break down and absorb moisture.
Your biggest problem is with time during long term storage the various seals are going to dry out. For the difference in price it's not worth it. Stick with pure synthetic and use the weight recommended in the owners manual.
