GM Transmission Maintenance

Well I knew this was going to happen but I didn't expect this quick. Maybe I did something wrong or this time around I pushed it hard.

I have a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500LD with a 6 speed. I have followed the Owners Manual about all the maintenance. I didnt see if they had a severe area but long story short. MY TRANSMISSION IS TRASHED!!! Dealer said the pump and torque converter went out. I am having a new TRANSMISSION put in now as we type.

Now issue is what happened. My last transmission on my last Silverado lasted until 230k. Of course I only towed every once in a while. But with this new truck I have 120k miles and since it left the dealer new I have towed 10,000 everyday over the steepest of hills.

Question is what can I do to preserve this new transmission and make it last over 120k?

On your 2019 Silverado, how often did you replace the transmission fluid before?  Also curious - which model year and transmission did you have in your previous Silverado?

Upgrade to a 2500, or diesel engine with allison transmission.

@daywalker I flushed the oil at 45k miles and changed not flush the oil at 90k with transmission filter and at 125k I was going to change the oil again. I never over heated it but I did push it very hard. I even ran a PTO off it. So after it was done towing for 11 hours straight I would use a PTO to run Aux power where I needed it.

My previous truck was a 2014 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 with a 6 speed. I literally have the same transmission and engine on my new truck. Only difference is I didn't have to rebuild the engine until 589k miles and my transmission was OK to rebuild but I opted for a new one at 210k or 225k miles around there. This new truck engine is strong runs great no issues not even the common issue of oil burning and stuff like that. This time around I did push this truck harder but only to get half the life I got on the other one dont seem right.

And no I won't get a Tundra because after fuel expenses and rebuilds I have with my 10 Tundra I can afford to replace the engine and transmission every 1 1/2 years and still have enough money on the side.

There is not a whole lot you can do, that you haven’t already done, but I personally would do the following (especially in anticipating of towing): 1.) change transmission fluid and filter (just drain and fill) every 20,000-30,000 miles; 2.) does that 2019 Silverado have an auxiliary transmission cooler? Maybe upgrade that so the transmission temps run cooler (I know you said it didn’t overheat, but how high did it get?); 3.) For towing 10,000 lbs - I know it is too late - but I would have gotten a 2500 HD (but with the gas engine, not diesel, and those have beefier 6-speed AT); 4.). If the limitation is the transmission internals and how much load they can handle (despite what GM states in their brochures), the transmission would need to be upgraded (but you already spent $4,000 so not suggesting to do that now)

Also, 5.) disable the cylinder deactivation system in that engine if you haven’t already; it’s possible going into V4 mode could have degraded the transmission (torque converter) over time.

Get and install the largest after market trans cooling radiator you can find.  Heat kills auto transmissions.  Get one with it's own fan and thermostat if you can.

Well, you bought the wrong Silverado model, you should have gotten the 2500 since those are much better built than the 1500. The 1500s used to be great, but now they are junk as they age when you get into the ones from the early 2010s and newer.

@mountainmanjoe I was going to but now that I'm drop 4k for a new transmission I just keep running this one for now plus I was thinking about getting a 2500 before I got a 1500 but I dont tow over 10k usually I'm always at 10k rarely I run to 11k and I feel very safe with a 1500 so I haven't seen reason too. Especially after my last experience with my other 1500 where I ran 900k miles one 2 transmissions and 1 engine rebuild I thought I would be fine with a gasser.
