Hi scotty. I have a 07 toyota camry 2.4 automatic with 166000 miles private party. its initially had a bad head gasket. was replaced. timing is dead on. on all marks. chain is perfect guides and tensioner all good. car took a bit to fire after initial repair. and now it starts fine i can drive it on the road perfect. with no issues. as soon as i let off the gas it will drop rpms drastically . never stalls or anything. compression was great on all four cylinders. no vacuum leaks. fuel pressure seems ok but stf and ltf are at 20 at idle. idling for the most part is pretty ok just has a ittle cough here and there and occasionally a strong exhaust smell after revving. ive checked over a few little things they all seem to check out. just curious on some tips on some other methods to try.
Many things can go wrong first have both the fuel pump pressure tested and the catalytic converter if the fuel pump pressure is low it can do it but if the back pressure in the catalytic converter is high it can also do the same thing
Ty very much ! WIll check those as well.
Air/fuel mix is off.
Vacuum leak...smoke check to reveal. Intake manifold/its piping, rotted hose, disconnected hose, etc.
Mass air flow sensor failing/failed. Dirty/improperly cleaned.
Oxygen sensor failing/failed. Wiring.
Ty for the recommendations! WIll be going over it all again!
Sounds like there is a solid chance it could have jumped time on start up possibly a tooth or the timing chain/belt could be stretched. Can correlation codes are going to be a mechanical problem if the timing is off it will also cause misfire codes as well as lean/rich conditions. In the past if you don’t add tension to the belt or chain upon assembly it was common to jump time on first crank before full oil pressure is achieved
