Help With Toyota GPS

Hi Scotty, love your videos. I have a 2017 Toyota 4-Runner, a couple of months ago I asked the dealership about updating the GPS system because I noticed it had missed a few roads and/or didn't give me the most ideal directions. The dealer said that it'll cost about $200CDN but added that I shouldn't expect to notice much from the upgrade, sort of meaning to imply, "don't waste your money". I am still wondering if I should do it and if there is a cheaper way because I don't use it often but when I do I really need it. What do you think?

Use apps on your phone instead. If you don’t have access, just buy a GPS. It is cheaper and it usually works better than the car gps.

I would walk around their show floor and try the navigation on cars with "updated" maps. See if it's worth the upgrade.

I’ve never found car navigation systems to be useful, plus not as feasible to upgrade the software over time (esp. if new roads, etc are added).  Since the vehicle does not have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, next best thing is to use your smartphone assuming you have (then use Google or Apple Maps).

In addition to all the good answers above, does your stock head unit & your phone support mirrorlink? If yes, then just use your phone for navigation via mirrorlink.
