Is overfilling engine oil bad for your engine?

I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 vortex max 5.3L V8 with 219,617. My question is what are the consequences of putting too much motor oil in a cars engine? What signals can people look out for?

If you put too much oil in the engine, pressure on the crankshaft will increase. The engine will also wear out due to not enough lubrication on the parts and oil will be found your spark plugs. Don't do it.

Your car is made to have a certain amount of oil. Too much is bad. Too little is bad. But there is a sweet spot for the oil. I’m between the lines or dots in the dipstick.

Why do you ask? If it's overfilled, you need to drain it off until the level is inside the hatched area on the dipstick.

Areas in the engine that should not have oil in them will get flooded and block the flow of air/gases. Moving parts that should not be submerged in oil will be flooded. The oil will get whipped up full of air like beat egg whites. This is why dipsticks have a maximum line.

I would have to agree. Don't over fill an engine with oil. I would like to say if the dip stick shows is a tad above the fill line it's no big deal but then you need to define tad which is subjective. Best to be just below the high line on the dipstick and never below the low line. If you do it yourself be patient and check while filling slowly. If someone else does the oil change check it and if it's over the high line have them drain it. Also run the engine for about a minute and check it again so the oil filter volume is accounted for.
