Hi Scotty....for years I have valued your advice and here I am asking again!
I drive a 2013 Toyota Highlander 6 cylinder (bought it new) that has 180,000 miles on it. We change the oil religiously with 0-20 Synthetic Castrol. While we change oil like we should, we’ve never done belts, hoses or (most importantly) timing chain. Prior to the pandemic we were set to trade it in and buy something new but have waited- being cautious. Recently, I’ve noticed a ticking while idling which really worries me. I called the dealership and they want $2900 to change the timing chain in LABOR only!
Keep it or sell it? it’s paid for and I love not having a note but hate to dump three or four grand that we likely won’t get back if we get rid of it. It still looks and drives great. Thanks in advance!
@cindyr
i would keep up the service and keep it , maybe get the serpentine belt changed
i still have a '97 camry that i bought new and refuse to get rid of it, makes strange noises, drives great lol
You’re probably right! Tks
Take it to a guy like Scotty, in your area, and get their independent diagnosis.
Their quote will probably be way less than what the dealer is asking too.
Good luck!

Wait....does Scotty have a shop? I’m near Galveston and always say the wheels are round for a reason- I’ll drive to him!
@CindyR
Scotty just moved to Tennessee. I’m not sure if driving there from Galveston is such a hot idea. Unless you wanna meet your idol & make a road trip outta it!
