I'm in Poland so I have a euro-spec 2012 Honda Civic (hatchback) with a 1.8L (R18Z4) engine. Although the car is coming up in age it has very low mileage at just around 47,000 (76,000 km). For a while now I've been trying to figure out why it's running lean with LT fuel trim at around 6-7% on average, and ST fuel trim sometimes runs as high as 9% at idle but never drops below 4%. I have a diagnostic computer (not dealer level but rather basic) Launch Creader Professional 129E, which still shows a fair amount of data. Overall, my car runs fine but the engine is slight rough at idle and fuel economy is decent below average. I bought the car used about 6 years ago when it only had about 28,000 miles (45,000 km), and as you can see I don't drive if often with most driving actually done in the city and on short-trips. I'm thinking that one of the issues could be related to the car needing its valves adjusted. I haven't had those done since I bought it and I don't know if they were ever done by the first owner. Could that be the issue? I'm also not getting any error codes but did notice something odd that EGR error is showing 99.2%. O2 voltage runs within normal range, MAF rate at idle fluctuates at about 1.65 g/s to 1.95 g/s but I think that's normal based on engine displacement of 1.8L. I checked for any vacuum leaks and could not detect anything. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Sounds like your egr valve isn't closing all the way.
(Actual EGR Position โ Commanded EGR) รท Commanded EGR = EGR ERROR.
The EGR position is displayed in percentages. 0% = totally closed. 100% = totally open.
The EGR ERROR is calculated using the above formula.
So don't get fooled. EGR Error 99.2% DOESN'T mean the computer commanded the EGR valve closed (0%) and the EGR valve position is at 99.2%.
In your case (EGR Error 99.2%), while the computer was performing a self test comparing the EGR Command position to the EGR actual position, the computer found that when it commanded the EGR valve closed (0%), the EGR valve wasn't completely closed.
Likely your EGR valve needs to be cleaned.
Thanks for the tip! 🙂 I found a video on YT on how to clean the EGR valve for similar model CIVIC. Looks simple. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
