Hey Scotty. I have a 2008 toyota Highlander Sport V6 (2GR-FE made in Japan). Wondering about spark plug change, it has 130k miles with original plugs. Looks like a time consuming tedious job to change those things. The engine runs like new, should i just keep running it? I've read those iridium plugs can last 200k+ miles. I'm worried if i start tearing into it a lot of those plastic connectors will snap off , turning the job into a nightmare. Thanks!
It’s time if it’s never been done before. Get Iridium plugs so they can potentially last longer.
That’s a really interesting question. Most of the problems from bad plugs (misfires, rough idling) are things you would notice. The likelihood of causing unwitting damage is relatively low.
That said, I don’t think you can count on 200k miles, so they will need to be replaced sometime. And the plugs and connectors are not going to get less fragile the longer you wait. Besides, inspecting the old plugs can give you insight into the health of the motor.
I typically follow the owners manual. If you are worried about damaging something, have an experienced mechanic do it now, and you do it next time.
Good luck!
