Hi Scotty,
I currently drive a 2017 Honda Civic Sedan 1.5L Turbo with about 28,000 miles. Should I go by time or mileage when it comes to changing the CVT fluid? When should I change the CVT fluid? At 30,000 miles or 40,000 miles or should I wait until the maintenance light "change transmission fluid" to come up. I plan to keep this vehicle for as long as possible. Thank you.
For normal driving, I would change every 40k miles. Btw, Is there a “change transmission fluid” light?
There is a Honda maintenance minder thing that tells you when to do stuff. Our Odyssey owners manual doesn't give any maintenance intervals but rather says "do as seen on maintenance minder system"
Yes, it is almost for every car, but it does not specify what needs to be changed. does it?
There are codes that match up with a specific maintenance item, like if code (3) pops up it would mean for example tranny fluid change or it says 20% oil life remaining etc.
The code meanings are in the owners manual. OP provided image of his below.
Great.
Go by the time/distance milestone, which comes first.
Since you want the car to last as long as possible, and since CVTs are sensitive transmissions, I’d change the fluid now. I think 30,000 miles/4yrs is a safe milestone.
Is the vehicle still under warranty?
Yes it is still under warranty. I plan to change the CVT fluid during my next oil change in about 32000-33000 miles which I assume should be fine.
Should be alright. Good luck!
In modern Hondas, it is the Maintenance Minder Service Codes that will show in Instrument Panel when it comes time for maintenance.
If the maintenance minder doesn't tell you to do it, do it no later than 40k miles (under normal conditions). Severe conditions should be less no later than 30k miles.
