Honda Civic Dies after Being put into Gear

Hi Scotty and friends,

I have a 1989 Honda Civic DX hatch, rebuilt automatic tranny, 1.5L with a little over 154k miles on it. Car starts right up and goes in reverse just fine, but when I put it back in drive and let the engine idle, it slowly revs down and dies, displaying the battery and oil light. It will immediately die or slowly shut off when I put it in park as well. I had the battery  load tested some time back in January as well as the alternator and they both seemed fine, but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Thank you.

When your transmission was rebuilt did they use the same torque converter or put in a new one? It’s what allows the transmission to slip while in park or in drive with your foot on the brake. When they go bad this is what happens some times, but can work fine in reverse. If you put it in drive and actually drive it should go forward just fine til you stop right?

Also if your fluid levels off it can cause similar symptoms sometimes, have you checked your fluid with the car running on a flat surface?

Hi Thumpy,
I personally don't know what they did with the torque converter, the previous owner also put on some mickey mouse rear suspension that also needs to be replaced. When I put the car in drive, it goes forward with some gas, but then slowly revs down and dies.

I haven't checked my fluid levels actually, I'll report back to you on that. Thank you!

I agree, it sounds like a torque converter problem.
