My 1995 Honda Civic had a clunking noise when it went over bumps on the road. I took it to an auto shop and they said the CV axles needed to be replaced. They replaced the CV axles and that solved the clunking noise issue. They also did an alignment on the car.
But, now there is excessive play in the steering wheel. It's so bad that at highway speeds I feel like I'm not in control of the car. Can a CV axle replacement affect the steering play on a car?

It can if they sold you bad axles that bind or manufactured incorrectly and also a lot has to be taken apart to replace them they could have screwed up and broken something easily
