[Solved] Honda CRV or Subaru Forester

Topic starter

Looking to buy a 2020 Honda CRV or Subaru Forester. Which is more reliable for day to day errands and occasional towing of a small (under 1500lbs) teardrop camper?  Would the Crosstrek work for this purpose?

Thanks!

PS So happy for all the good things happening in Scotty's life. He deserves only the best!

In my opinion, the CR-V by far! However, do you live in an area which requires frequent use of AWD? If yes, I’d go Subaru on that one as they have the best AWD systems.

The CR-V will outlast the Forester, hands down!

Thanks for taking time to respond! Front wheel drive has always been sufficient for where I live. I prefer a lasting car over bells and whistles. Honestly wanted to buy American but hear nothing but negative things about Ford SUVs... tough choice in that respect but at least you helped me narrow it down.

I'd get honda.  Suby boxer engines have inherent design problems simply because it's a boxer engine and they'll all burn oil because of it.  How it's parked has a lot to do with the oil usage believe it or not.  Don't get me wrong, a nice vehicle and depends on use needs, but honda will cost you less in the long run with less maintenance.

How long do you keep a car?  Something to considered when making the decision. Ex.  You like the Suby ride and everything else better than honda and don't keep cars longer than 5 years...get the Suby.

@hillbilly
yeah i'd agree with that.. i had an outback that seized when oil burned out, of course i was a kid and didnt know squat... it was traumatic. I assume, in my answer about the ride, guy is considering 2020 models, so he's gonna hopefully be angelic in his maintenance regimine.. CRV is a tank like HB mentioned. Love the honda engine design 🙂 🙂

@hillbilly
Thanks HB for helping me narrow it down! Phew. Disaster averted! I have been driving my Ford Focus wagon since 2005 & 190,000mi, so yes, I will go for the Honda!
Honestly wanted a Ford again, but read so many bad reviews that I have to do what makes sense financially!

Funny... my first new car was a 1979 Subaru Wagon 4WD with a second shifter to switch if from front-only to 4WD!  I paid $5.995.00 for it.  And my last new car was a 2006 Honda Element 4WD... which way-back-then... had the same drive train and frame as the the Honda CRV.

OK OK... what about...TODAY???

I like the way hillbilly and Scotty think.  If you buy a USED HONDA CRV you can save a ton of dough keep it forever.  Scotty is NOT particularly fond of Subaru motors.

But... if you're a BIG SPENDER... feel free to take a HUGE HIT on a new SUBARU... but it won't go 100-150-200K like  HONDA.

@alleyascot
Thank you so much for helping me narrow it down! Phew. Disaster averted! I still have my 2005 Ford Focus wagon w/ 190,000 city miles! Feeling sad bc I LOVE that car but my son needs a kick a round vehicle, and I have to move on.

for the towing id say get the honda. you don't really won't to be putting a load on that subarus transmission.

the subaru is a little more fun in my opinion.

but in the long run, get the honda.

whatever you feel is better. because they are both

pretty reliable cars.

@04-camry
Yep, I know. My heart wants the Subaru, but my head agrees with you! Thanks for taking time to respond!

I just test drove both with my sister the other day. When we were driving, even though I'm 110% honda guy, I'd have to go with the Forester.

Forester's suspension is way nicer, you'll notice when cornering on the highway exits, and when driving over rougher roads, the fully independent suspension is going to make a huge difference. Honda Accord has a good suspension.

Thing is though - don't get 2020 anything. A 2016 Forester with 10-20,000 miles is going to be just as good as that 2020 Forester with 400 miles. But a lot cheaper!

CRV i guess has some nice / affordable tech higher end interior options but I don't love the increased size / handling of it. The Forester is going to feel like a big boi car, while the CRV is just a little more student'y. I'd still be @ 2016 @ 10-20k miles for the CRV too as target for a used car, at a dealer, w/ carfax.

Have fun deciding! watch out for extra add-on's at the Stealership. If you want to avoid sales pressure, ask your bank for a pre-approval when you go, even if stealership has a better % rate, you can negotiate easier with a pre-approval on the loan.

Great advice! I appreciate your response. Love that Scotty set this up!

Scooty has the CRV (NOT the Soobee) on his "5 Used SUV's You Should Buy" video.
But he really LUVS LUVS loves the a 2016 RAV4 and 2016 HIGHLANDER!

Oh wow, thank you Alley- will take a look! I had a Toyota Matrix that gave me a lot of front end trouble ( a lease so it was only a year or two old), and so I never thought of having a Toyota again. But I totally trust Scotty.
Appreciatively,
Krebby
