Honda Prelude as a first car?

Is the 5th Generation Honda prelude a good first car? What’re some common problems among them? Thanks.p

The Prelude is a good car for an enthusiast. It might not be the best first car for an average person though, they can have various issues needing addressed, especially with them being 20-25 yrs old.

If you get one with a good, decently healthy H22 engine they can be fun zippy cars, but the auto trans on these are known to be problematic, so its best you pursue one with a Manual transmission for sure.

The engine has FRM cylinders so they cause the piston oil control rings to wear out faster which cause the engine to burn oil

If you ask me though, yes they're good cars 😝

The Honda prelude is known to have a problem with the automatic transmissions. They tend to be one quite weak and are known for slipping with age. If you're really after a prelude, choose one with a manual transmission.

That cars 20 years old. You should look for something more modern for better reliability. Check Autotempest.com for good deals on used cars!

Any suggestions? Looking to keep it under or around 5K and I'd prefer it if it wasn't too slow.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/827805618/overview/?aff=atempest&cmp=atempest There it is 5k on the nose. Use that advanced feature button on the site I linked and you can put in exactly what you're looking for. But if you do anything get a 5 speed or 6 speed. Automatics suck and if you learn how to drive a 5 speed at a young age your going to have a good driver for life.

This is the car I have right now and it's the best car I've ever owned by FAR. If want it to be a little sporty then grab a Civic SI they have 2.0l a LSD and a 6 sped and the 2 door cars are plenty fast enough because they're so light one of the lightest weight cars on the road... and the parts are literally everywhere for this car they made a billion of them and I've had mine for 7ish years now and the only thing I've need to do is regular maintenance and mods >: ). and it even has a backseat and good sized trunk and I'm 6'4 and my hair lightly brushes up against the roof liner from time to time. I've modded mine and it's perfect for the street. I was able to keep up with a AWD Turbocharged 4 door car until well past 3rd gear from a stop and I ain't got no turbo... Plus I think the 2door version is hella sexy

Avoid these cars. Although they share many parts with Accords but they have weird things like the AC which is almost impossible to find one. They are weird cars in a sense and since Honda stoped making them a long time ago, finding parts are not that easy. You better off with Accords.
