[Solved] How do I tell if a used car has had it's transmission fluid changed in the past?

I just bought a 2017 Toyota Sequoia SR5 with the 5.7L iForce engine, 4WD, and 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 173,000 miles on it and runs fine, the dealer manager said that the fluid was changed in the past because he "knows" the previous owner. I don't really trust word of mouth and know Scotty says that if it's never been changed to not change it, but I was wondering if there is a way for me to tell by inspecting the fluid? Any tips would be helpful.

Sign up for the toyota owners website, and enter the vehicle as yours. You can then look at any work was done to it at a toyota dealership.

Hopefully it will have records of transmission service. Two of my current vehicles, a Lexus GX470, and Toyota Matrix, both had records from toyota showing transmission service. So it doesn't hurt to check, and it is free.

paper trail is the only sure way.

If you don't have service records there's really no way to tell. Don't trust anything the seller tells you. However at high mileage if the fluid is still clean it probably has been changed.

You might want to check the FAQ for details.
