Hey Scotty I know how you say that cheaper made cars their automatic transmission is the first to go but how long can a 4cyl engine actually last if I baby it, change the oil and take care of it by not driving hard. My dad has always took extremely care of his car I want to do the same and make it last as long as possible, suggestions? Thanks

Which year, make, model, mileage, and transmission?

1992 Mitsubishi Galant it has 189,000 with a f4a22 automatic transmission, doesn’t burn oil and I want to baby it and make it last as long as possible

You have to break down the variables. Some of them are as follows:

1. Quality of engine design;

2. Quality of manufacturing processes;

3. Type of engine: Naturally aspirated, turbocharged, GDI or combo;

4. Type of driving, hwy, city or mixed;

5. How the engine is paired with the transmission.

These are some of the variables, along with good maintenance practices. Good maintenance enhanced the life of any engine. But some engines are better designed and manufactured than others.

Frequency of oil changes matter, in fact, they are critical. But so is choosing a reliable product.

Yes a naturally aspirated 2.0 Mitsubishi engine. With a mixed driving of both.

Which make? There are so many factors involved. Assuming Mitsubishi, you might get 100-200k miles out of it if you take care of it. Some Toyotas have reached 1 million miles on original engine but most of them were V6 or V8s. I mean in ideal scenarios you should be able to get 3 4 500k miles out of lets say a Corolla 4 cylinder engine.

Yes a Mitsubishi 2.0 engine naturally aspirated, my dad had gotten 310,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. I want to make sure I can do the same, I want to make it last as long as possible.

Lots of variables. If you have an engine that has a good basic design and is well-made it can last for decades and hundreds of thousands of miles. I have a car here whose engine has lasted 50 years without an overhaul, though probably some of the horses have escaped over that time.

I should have added also that proper maintenance is the key. It doesn't matter how good an engine you have, if it is abused and neglected it is not going to last long.

anywhere from 100,000 miles and up

Too many variables to say conclusively.
