I've came across a 1982 FJ40 being sold by an elderly neighbor. I haven't seen him driving it more than a handful of times over all these years so I know it's been parked in a garage and it's super clean. It has only 6k miles on it. It's manual and has some upgrades like Old Man Emu shocks and couple other things which I actually like. What would be a good price to offer for it? It won't be a daily driver or anything; just for weekend driving every now and then and because I want to have it.
How much does he want for it? What are the prices for such vehicles in your area?
This is a situation when you boys just need to negotiate a price considering what he is asking and what you are willing to pay. It will be difficult, I would think, to compare this 1982 with only 6K miles to any other FJ40 because you probably are not going to find another comparable low mileage one that has been garage kept. Time for a pow wow. Hope you can get it
This might give you an idea of current (crazy) sales prices for nice examples

Oh yeah I check this website frequently and the prices are definitely crazy.
FJ, you said it is being sold. Did the man state a price, or is he trying to do an auction?
Thanks for the replies. So he's a neighbor and knowing I'm interested in these cars he offered me first and if I don't want it or we can't agree on a price he'll put it up for an auction. Not sure about price in my area as I haven't seen one for sale in my area for a while (or those being sold their condition isn't comparable to this one at all). But based off of the prices I see on Bring a Trailer and the condition of the car I was thinking of offering $50k. I am willing to offer more since I don't want to lose this vehicle but was thinking of $50k as a starting point. Would appreciate any further thoughts.
So, we are all wanting to know if your neighbor has told you what he is asking for it???
As I stated in the above response he offered it to me and we will be talking about price; he did not mention an asking price which is why I am asking thoughts on what starting price to offer him.
Okay. Thanks for the clarification.
