Hello, I live in Canada (Quebec) and wanted to know the best way to treat rust on the chassis of a 2012 Toyota Matrix, 116 000 km, and on the differential of a 2015 Lexus IS250 AWD 108 000 km (rest of the chassis is clean).
My father usually took care of these things but he's kinda given up on making an effort in life now, so I'm in charge of keeping the cars clean. If it was for him he'd trade the matrix and loan a brand new car, but scotty has taught me better.
The issue is that both these cars have never had a rustproofing treatment before the winter under the chassis, I want to take care of this in the following months.
My plan was to first go to a rent-your-own lift place, get under the car and brush off all the surface rust with a drill and a wire wheel attachment, then comes my question.
-At this point, am I better to coat it with a 'RustCheck' product, which stops the rust formation and cures as a primer, or should i just go get it sprayed immediately with the rustproofing solution and dismiss painting the bare steel.

I will comment on painting or not.
My thought is, get as many layers between the bare metal and the salt that is about to come. I cleaned the frame on my GX470, then layer up some farm implement paint because I got it super cheap, then before I head up north if I expect to hit salted roads, I am going to slather on some por 15 or at least some fluid film or something. Hopefully the salt never gets past the oil/gease layer. If it does, at least I got a thick layer of paint before I start losing frame.

For the interested, i've been reccomended elsewhere the following product for the undercoating.
Cosmoline - RP-342 "HEAVY" Military-Grade Rust Preventive Spray, which coats on like a heavy rugged wax.

i'm sorry to say but the Lexus looks terminal.
anything you can do to delay the cancer will help but rust is insidious, even the smallest speck, coated or not will continue to spread.
they salted the heck out of the roads in chicagoland and that stuff is downright evil!
