2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring Manual

140,000 km

My car is starting to lose power and gas mileage is getting worse.  What can I do to know what the problem is?

It's probably from natural wear and tear. Hyundai motors aren't known for going hundreds of thousands of miles.

You can do a basic tune up:

1. Clean the MAF and throttle body

2. Check the fuel filter and air filter

3. Check the spark plugs

Beyond that, not much you can do.

Thanks but I've done the throttle body, and replaced the air filter and spark plugs. It also doesn't have a MAF sensor but it has a MAP sensor. Nothing's changed, but I'll try the fuel filter.

The most informative information I know of is getting a good wet and dry compression test.  This will give you an indication of the volumetric efficiency of your engine.  A less indicative (and less expensive) is to attach a vacuum gauge to a manifold vacuum source and read the results.

I will try this, thanks.
