I just got a 2006 toyota camry automatic transmission with OD and was wondering how to properly use it to get the best gas mileage and not put extra wear on my transmission. I normally drive on a 60-70 mpg highway then get onto a 35-45 road the rest of the way to work. I read somewhere that the OD should be used over 40 mph to increase efficiency but was wondering if that was correct. I was also wondering if it was bad to do this while accelerating or while moving at all. Thank you!

Are you sure you are measuring the mpg correctly? The numbers are too good.

OD is automatically used by your car unless you turn it off manually. If you turn it off, you simply let the car know you don't want to use the highest gear, so your engine works at higher rpm and your mpg drops.
it's automatic. Just let it do its thing.
