Weren't those problems noted when the car was checked out before purchase?

Better pray it's just the PCV valve, otherwise you could be looking at a worn-out engine.

Have you scanned for codes and checked live data for issues?

Well, it's a 17-year-old Hyundai so there could be any number of problems. They weren't as bad back then as they are today but still age takes its toll. Start with the basics like filters, spark plugs, fuel pressure. If you have not done a diagnostic scan yet it would probably help to do that. Maybe also test for excessive back pressure due to a clogged catalytic converter since that can strangle your engine.
