Hey I have a 2012 Hyundai Veloster with dual clutch transmission, I was driving the other day after taking it to a car wash and the LCD screen warning came up saying to pull over protection mode enable, and I noticed that my even gears 2,4,6 was having high revs like I was on neutral, and the of gears were working fine and then reverse was working a little funny idk what it could be? My car was working perfectly fine before that

Connect a good all systems OBD2 scanner before the car clears the codes!

Sounds like either an actuator or the clutch has gone bad - please report back what error codes popped up.

2012 Hyundai Veloster with dual clutch transmission

What's the millage at the time of failure?

Also out of curiosity, I have the D6KF1 electrified variant, while the Veloster has the regular D6GF1, I've herd they're constantly jerky and are very prone to vibrations and "hunting for gears" - would that be an accurate description?

And the reason why I hate these with a flaming passion is the costs to repair them - the clutch does not last and it can easily get over $1,000 in parts alone to replace the clutch and that's if you're lucky and will need only a clutch.

Do not take it as an estimate, just a very rough and inaccurate price list, The dual mass on these can go out, you only know if it's bad when you take it apart and it alone is almost a grand (I'm unsure if the Veloster has it, I remember Kia Needs with this gearbox having them), the clutch pack is easily over a grand, the actuators ("shift forks") can get to about $500, and genuine gearbox oil (although that's just manual transmission fluid so eh maybe $50) - and I'd say about 5 hours of labor so another $500-$1,000 here.

Nightmares, why didn't you get the conventional torque converted planetary 6 speed? - the conventional 6 speed, unlike the DCT, lasts and cost nothing to rebuild.

The car was at 154645km when it started haven’t drove it sense then, i brought it to mister transmission, (transmission shop) here in town and they said they couldn’t find anything on the scanners, they only did a test drive and looked under the hood and told me today that I might need a new transmission because the clutch is damaged and it’s a wet clutch, and said that it was to hard of a fix so they offered to give me a used transmission with a 109000km installed with one year warranty, for 4200$!! Am I getting ripped off?? and idk why I bought a car with this transmission I should’ve researched more on it, a big mistake on my part !!

Pretty typical for a clutch to go out.

Although this really sounds like a fork.

new transmission because the clutch is damaged

They're insane - never come back to them.

no sane person replaces a tranny because of a clutch.

An amateur tech can do that job, there's absolutely nothing to it.

(except prices for components, those are a bit rough)

Assuming you have the 6 speed: Find a good place that will not overcharge you for taking the transmission off and installing it, you want them to take it off, inspect the dual mass (if equipped), replace the clutch assembly, and inspect the clutch forks (although personally I always advise to just replace them, you can find new ones for like $500 a pair) and replace the fluid (at least the fluid is cheap) and initiate clutch learning.

Here's the 6 speed variant:

wet clutch

No it ain't.

Both the 6 (2012-up) and 7 speed (as far as I know 2015-up) transmissions on these are DRY clutch.

The only wet clutch tranny I've seen on these was installed starting in 2020 (the HORRID 8 speed)

Besides, there's no issue in replacing a dual wet clutch.

Can you look under the hood, to the right on the engine, look down - most Hyundai transmissions have a sticker there / metal stamping that has the exact transmission variant written on it. (I'm almost certain it's D6GF1)

Am I getting ripped off??

In my opinion, yes.

Thanks!!! I’ll do just that and keep you all updated!!

Just wanna make sure before just so I know we’re on the same page, my car is a automatic DCT transmission 6 speed is that what we’re talking about ?

Over the years, the veloster was offered with 3 different dual clutch trannys - your one should be the 6 speed variant “Hyundai-Kia 6 speed dry clutch DCT automatic - D6GF1”.
Others, transmissions, you most likely do NOT have are the 7 speed dry, and the 8 speed wet.
Any good transmission shop will know.

Thanks for the info I Appreciate it!

what it could be?

It could be that your transmission has died, but it should be diagnosed by a pro using a high-end bidirectional scan tool. Moderator @dan may have more specific information.

Should I bring it to a dealer? Or is that a bad idea sense I don’t have warranty on it anymore

A dealer will always be the most expensive option, with a high probability of ripping you off.
