I accidentally left the gas cap open

Thing is I was running out of gas in the middle of nowhere in Ohio with 5 miles of gas left in the tank. There was a gas station nearby but it was already shut.

I started the car again and drove about 4 miles to a gas station on the interstate

I found out I forgot to close the gas tank. The gas cap was not tightened and the door was left unshut. I felt desperate and probably forgot to do it while I was searching for a gas station. I filled up a full tank.

Car runs fine, no problems. No check engine light. Could I have caused any damage to the car?

Could I have caused any damage to the car?

No.

We've all done that once. It happens. A few years ago, I forgot to put the gas cap back on the tank and shut the door. I realized when I got out of my Ranger that I forgot. I felt a sense of shame for a minute, haha. Your car is perfectly fine. Smile

yeah ... once...

I consciously remember my Ranger once, lol, I was preoccupied with something that day. My Mustang on the other hand I've gone it probably 15x. Capless fuel filters, lol. That's partly why I put Slimer on the gas door, haha.

I always replace the cap, but for some reason I forget to close the cover once in a while and then wonder why everyone is honking at me LoL What's a "slimer"?

It's a Ghostbusters ghost, the first one that gets caught in the 1984 movie, lol. My Ranger was fully open once, and I was ashamed, haha. Luckily, I only drove around 600 feet after refueling, to park. Those capless fuel tanks are something else, though. Because you don't need to replace the cap, sometimes I just get in the car and go, forgetting to close the fuel door.

I doubt it. But since its a Chrysler Pacifica I would have my eye on the transmission. They are garbage. Scotty Mentioned he had a customer with Chrysler Pacifica and they were on their second or third automatic transmission. Good luck.

The only fear I can see is whether any debris or water got in the gas tank. Otherwise, you'd be fine. I guess it's too late to tell you now, but the main concern I have is the van being a Chrysler product as they are notoriously known for low quality. New Chryslers are a rare sight on the road for that reason...

meh, my old camry i accidentally left the gas cap on top of the car and drove off, didnt bother replacing it. drove for 4 years without a gas cap before i bothered replacing the thing. never had any issues with it

must have been VERY old. Anything made in at least the last 30 years would have lit up the malfunction indicator, because the gas cap is required to make EVAP system work properly.

makes sense. it was a 2001

2001 is less than 30 years ago. It uses the OBDII system. If the malfunction lamp wasn't on, then it was broken.

hard to tell. the catalytic converter had been cut out so the check engine light was always on. i could never tell whether something was wrong with the car until it would have something major

Exactly it was on like I said. And that's the trouble with cutting out your cats and having a permanent trouble light. Neutral
I guarantee you had some EVAP system faults stored in there, and maybe others.
