How do I choose a used SUV

I am perplexed. I trust Scotty’s advice about the 5 best used SUV‘s but for these what is the most mileage should they be to make the purchase. I am looking for a 2009 Lexus RX and the 2001 Honda Pilot. Lastly what do you think of the 2017 Honda HRV I am on a fixed income and as a senior I am limited on the numbers of years to pay on a decent vehicle. This doesn’t mean I think I will pass before paying off. But would like to be able to do other things than pay on a car for 60 months . Appreciate your advice. Most grAteful Jean

Probably you'd want to keep mileage to no more than 150K miles.

An old luxury car (Lexus) can be a poor choice, lots to go wrong that can cost $$$$ to fix. Lexus is well made but things inevitably wear out over time.

The Pilot is over 20 years old and a vehicle that old is generally not a good idea for someone that is not going to work on it themselves.

There have been some transmission problems reported with the HR-V but it's hard to say how common they are, @dan may have some definite information on that.

According to people I know, when it's used in the city / in congested areas - pretty unreliable.
Most failures happen at relatively low millage, just as the powertrain warranty runs out.

Although there ins't much information on Honda's gearboxes in general and CVTs in particular, what remains true for all of Honda's CVTs is very high repair costs, and for most of them not being cheap to maintain.

I agree that the Lexus can cost too much to repair, that the pilot is too old...

maybe a regular sedan will be a better choice?

As far as crossovers, a low millage Subaru XV is a better choice over a HRV (Better engine, better tranny, more space).

Maybe a Mazda CX-3? They're solid small crossovers but you shouldn't overpay for one (they were cheap cars new)
