I just bought a used 2003 manual Mazda6 sedan off a private seller the car has trouble starting but when it does it smokes and has a quite knock on the left side the owner before me almost ran it dry of oil I have yet to check the fuel pump and fuses...

It’s my first time working on Mazda’s and have little to none experience with them I have fixed easy parts on other cars and would like help please if anyone knows anything

Start with simple stuff: measure the fuel line pressure. Change the air filter and clean the MAF sensor.

I would get the car scanned before anything. It's a good thing you got the car cheap. Though with the problems it seems to have it will cost ya to fix it since it was also prior abused. Seems like ya got a project. Have fun. OBD II codes should be able to tell you the main problems you would want to get out the way as well as completing a basic visual inspection. That's what I would start with and should give you plenty to work on if you have the patience to learn. It's never a good idea to start just throwing money at parts before doing diagnosis. So keep that in mind as you work. And be sure to also check the Mazda TSB's for what you need to know.

You said it smokes, when it runs, and knocks.... I'd be looking for a motor if you're going to fix the car..
