2008 Hyundai Azera V6 lifters knocking after oil change

Hey i have a 2008 Hyundai azera 3.8L v6 197k. i got it this January i could tell the engine had a misfire so i replaced the ignition coils and sparkplugs and it ran perfectly for about a month. I knew it needed a wheel alignment, new tires, an oil change and cabin filter. So i made a couple separate appointments i did the oil change and cabin filter at one location then the rest at a separate location and different day, but this oil change took 3 hours! These people had no idea what they were doing and took absolutely forever anyway i get my car back drove it for less then a week and started getting lifter knocking, one night it started lightly next day it was super loud now the mechanic i went to said the lifters are needed to be replaced ( also kind of sketchy mechanic shop) but i have seen that if you don't have the right oil and or oil pressure it could cause lifter knocking. My question is should i do my own oil change and make sure i use the right oil or should i just get the lifers replaced? And does anyone know how much it would be to replace the lifters I've been trying to get a answer from locale mechanics and they dont call or email back

TLDR: Mechanic shop took 3 hours for an oil change (most likely didnt know what they were doing) now i have lifter knocking could it be wrong oil/oil pressure or do i have to replace my lifters?

Heres a clip on my engine and the noise

Im doing an oil change in a bit also going to get a high mile additive to see if it quiets or stops the noise thank you guys that commented so much more helpful then the local mechanics I've talked to

Change the oil yourself and make sure you use the correct oil viscosity and good filter. Also, use synthetic oil.

You're always better off doing your own oil changes so you know it's done right. Try that first with the recommended grade of oil for that engine along with a quality filter before spending money on possibly unnecessary repair work. If an oil pressure problem is suspected check it with a mechanical gauge. I would not consider a light lifter tap in a 14-year-old engine with nearly 200K miles to be unusual or a big problem but you don't want to be hearing loud rapping or knocking.

Im going to upload a clip of the sound on youtube and post it here if you dont mind checking it out it is quite loud btw but didnt really happen until i had the crazy long oil change

Do your own oil and filter changes.  Then, you won't have to rely on anyone else's incompetence.  Or find a competent mechanic you can work with.

@Zach2000 Hey man! I’ve had the same thing happen to me. Though I’ve changed my oil, and didn’t have any issues doing so. It just happens with age sometimes in vehicles. Lifters last about ~100K miles and maybe more if you take care of them. Atleast the manual request that you replace them around that interval. Let me ask you a question though. Does your lifter tick, sound like this?

if it does let me know. If it doesn’t sound exactly like this, let me know. I can maybe help if it does sound like that.

If you can upload a YouTube video of your car imitating that sound. Let us hear it, to try to make a correct diagnosis. Many ticking and Knocking sounds can be many different things. It honestly could be noisy injectors. So If you wouldn’t mind uploading a YouTube video and copying the link and sharing it with us! Thank you!

Nathaniel J.

I will thank you

Man I hate to break the bad news to you. I don’t believe that’s lifter tick. I believe that is either piston slap, or rod knock (due to how loud it was and the frequency of ranges) you see oil has to reach the top of the engine, and once it does, the noise will quiet down. Though if that noise correlates with RPM which it seems like it does. It gets louder as you rev the engine and faster. I’m not shocked though, Hyundai & Kia have been known for rod knock/piston slap as higher mileage is apparent. If it was lifters, it would stay at that same noise, because even when the oil reaches the top of the engine. Lifter tick is caused when the push rod or camshaft doesn't make continuous contact with the lifters. This can be because the lifter has become worn out, as is the case usually with hydraulic lifters, or the valve has come out of adjustment ( though you don’t have hydraulic lifters I believe with your car model ). Lifter tick has it in the name, it sounds like a tick. Like in your video it sounded like a “KNOCKING noise”or “SLAP noise”. Not a “tick” it sound like Rod Knock and/or Piston Slap. So I hate to break it to you but that engine is on its last legs. Eventually if it’s rod knock. You’re eventually gonna head one LAST LOUD knock, and your rod is gonna shoot out of the engine. So I’m sorry but it’s the end of that engines life. It did last a long while though. ~200K which is decent for those Hyundai & Kia Engines. So I’d either junk it, cause you couldn’t probably get but like ~500$ for that (parts only). Or replace the engine with a rebuilt one, or a junkyard engine (cheaper but you take a gamble). I wish you Good luck and former apologizes.

[expletive deleted] man, this is my first car had it only 3 months and saved up for 6 months ☹️ But thank you for the info

Just a friendly reminder, this is a family forum, swearing is against forum rules. Thanks.

Yeah I’m sorry Zach, it’s very unfortunate. Though it did last a good long time considering it’s particular weak engine and transmission design. It’s just very sad to hear that you just bought it. I hope and pray your transition to a new vehicle goes well. Good luck! If you have any questions about checking out used vehicles be sure to ask us on this forum page! Mechanic shop took 3 hours for an oil change (most likely didnt know what they were doing)

or they were busy

They had a bunch of cars in the parking lot most probably waiting to be picked up but regardless i made the appointment 3 days in advance and after I was in there for an hour and a half I checked out their reviews and most everyone said horrible wait times
