Hello!

I notice older people are buying SUVs so they can easily get in and out of the car. And since you are getting older, I suggest you RAV4. Last years of a generation are usually the most perfected. That's why I picked 2018 Auris and not 2013 one.

There is a site with basic info about RAV4 issues (Click there).

Good luck!

I have a final question (i decide to buy Avensis petrol?

my choice is between 1800cc or 1600cc? the second have better price for used car.

thank you again

Jeremias.

I'd go RAV4. Easier to get in and out of.

The Avensis engine is the 2ZR-FAE, same one used in the Toyota Corolla LE Eco, which had extra valvematic technology and prone to some problems. The platform isn't bad same one as the E150 Corolla. I head in eastern Europe parts were more expensive for the Avensis than lets say Corolla but I don't know about Germany.

The Rav4 seems like a safe bet especially the later years like 2016 2017.

The avensis with a manual is alright.

The RAV4 with a manual is probably betters.

Don’t get a CVT automatic,
Don’t get a diesel Toyota,
Don’t get a hybrid.

thank You very much.

The 1.8L came with a bad CVT transmission. I’d get the 1.6L because if I remember correctly they come with a manual.
As far as the engines them selfs the 1.6L is 1ZR and the 1.8L is 2ZR - basically the same engine. They can last you over 250,000 miles but if you don’t service them frequently enough (every 5k-6k miles) they will be oil burners.

@dan 250000 miles or kilometres?

@g-t with proper maintenance, and taking all the preemptive steps (listen for chain rattle, change the coils and not only sparks, and so on…) this engine just does not fail (it’s a downscaled version of the US Corolla engine)
I’ve seen a unit with 350,000 kilometers and herd they can go for much longer than that.
When I owned an old ‘rolla with like from 50k to 100k miles (1.6L 1ZR on an E150 model) I remember 7k miles the engine oil would look as good as the day I put it in. Great engines expect for leaks and complexity.
The entry on the scan tools data base says “rated to last 200,000km, in reality easily goes over 300,000km”
Imo that’s the last well built Toyota engine before they decided to invest more in features, expensive interiors, efficiency improvements and other things that take away from reliability.

I truly believe that with frequent oil changes, an avensis can go 200 and 250 thousand miles on the original engine as 400,000 km as the very first ‘99 Corolla Zr engines have (although quality has gone downhill)

@dan interesting. Do 1.8 L ones hold so long too on latest generation of Avensis? I noticed they have manual gearboxes too.

@g-t The 1.8L is less good but still one of the best.

A lot of issues with the variable value timing, but if you ignore the service schedule and do everything with twice the recommend frequency, you can get about 180k-200k miles or even more if you baby it (300,000km - 320,000km). These are very built engines but must be serviced frequently.
