I want to know your comment on my deliberate overfilled transmission

Hi Scotty,

I did a transmission fluid flush on my 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5L, with 22,5000km on it.  And I deliberately added a liter of 10W-30 engine oil to overfill the transmission.  After couple years of driving, nothing wrong with it.  In fact the shifting is smoother than before.  What is your thought on that.

Regards,

Jack C

Is it a manual or automatic that you added 10w-30 oil in it?

It is an automatic transmission.

Well... I am pleased to see that it didn't hurt anything and you are claiming that its actually performing better. People have do experiment with their cars sometimes even though its risky. However, that doesn't mean that everyone should just start pouring motor oil in their transmissions. Adding motor oil probably raised the viscosity by a lot and maybe that had something to do with it.

overfilling a tranny is generally a bad idea. Too much and you'll just end up with a mess on your driveway.

1L of motor oil in the ATF isn't going to make a huge difference. But I don't think it will help either. It's not designed for trannies. ATF is a hydraulic fluid. Motor oil is not.

I think you got lucky. I sure wouldn't mess with a vehicle that only has 22k on it. Unless you meant 225k in which case YAHOO!

My car has 225km on it. I think adding the engine oil to the automatic transmission is similar like adding the Lucas transmission fix. It adds more lubrication to the transmission.

I think the main principle behind Lucas is that it thickens. But hey whatever works.
