I'm thinking of buying a LEXUS

I'm thinking of buying a Lexus in the future but realistically I only want either the ES line or the IS line. I understand that the IS line is a sportier option but why is it a sportier line? What are the differences between the two?

Which years or generation are you considering?  In a nutshell, the Lexus ES is a front wheel drive (FWD) midsize sedan based on the same platform as the Toyota Camry/Toyota Avalon and was designed for comfort.  The Lexus IS is a rear wheel drive (RWD) sports sedan smaller than the ES that was tuned to be more nimble, handle better, brake better than the ES.  It will ride a little more firm than the ES so they are two different vehicles entirely.  You have to decide which your prefer more.  You can read the reviews/watch the YouTube videos online but really test drive both and see which is more for you.

It depends on your needs. You can look up reviews of both them, and even better check them out in person. The ES is more luxurious than the IS, and the IS isn't really meant for people hauling (tiny backseat).

Here you can compare specs, this one is for 2010 models: https://www.cars.com/research/compare/?vehicles=lexus-es_350-2010,lexus-is_250-2010

Or you could meat in between and get a GS, a sportier but still luxury oriented Lexus.

The GS is a good compromise. In fact that is my next vehicle.

Yes, I bet it isn't as tiny as the IS but better to drive than the ES.
One thing to note with most Lexus sedans, they are less practical inside than the Toyota cars they are based on because they need to look more stylish.

I like the GS as well. I've driven the IS cars as loaners and they seem a little cramped inside to me.
