Hey Scotty, I have a 2017 BMW 540i (b58) and I want to do a intake resonator delete so I can hear more induction noise. Does that intake resonator do anything or is it just to silence the sound?
Iv been told its just for sound by most people and all aftermarket intake systems come with it deleted, but one person said it retains air for when needed. I plan on keeping the stock intake system and just changing the pipe so it has no resonator and pair it with a drop in filter instead of a aftermarket open intake because I dont want hot air.
Thank you.

Don't touch it. You will hurt engine efficiency.
Modern engines are very precisely tuned. The resonator and valve timing all work together in delicate concert. You are not smarter than a BMW engineer.

It is designed to attenuate certain negative harmonic frequencies, but allow others, and construct a standing pressure wave near your intake valves for proper engine breathing. So is your exhaust sytem. This is why some engines have variable length intake runners. It is tuned to perform as best it can at all possible RPM ranges. If you start messing with it, you're going to get some funky air flow that the engine doesn't like. Unless you're a fluid mechanics engineer, and have done air density testing and simulations, you should leave it alone.
Nice detailed answer, good information in here.
