I am looking at buying a 2000 Chevy S-10 LS automatic 4-cylinder with 178,000 miles for $2,500 through a personal sale. No noticeable major issues. I was just wondering how good they are and how long they can last? Thank you!

With any truck that old, the answer is “it depends”.
My dad’s (RIP) 97 s10 has 300,000 miles and is still in the family. He babied it , maintained it religiously, and never towed. He had the V6, but I think the I4 has the same 4L60 automatic; bombproof.
The 4 won’t be as durable as the 6, which is based on GM’s legendary small block, but is still a good engine and still easy and cheap to fix.
That said, those were cheap trucks and if the one you’re looking at wasnt maintained or towed frequently, it’s gonna be near end-of-life. I think the asking price is high, especially since you will need a reserve fund for repairs.
Thank you. Very helpful. I have reason to believe it was well maintained. The guy selling it is a friend of my brother. His father was a car man and just died leaving him 15 cars, including a few classic corvettes. He had his own lift in his garage for oil changes and repairs. Not likely one to ignore maintenance.
That's a lot of mileage for a 4 cylinder pulling a pick up truck
That did not really answer my question. Is an S-10 a good truck and how many miles can they usually take?
Those are very good, reliable trucks and easy to work on. As long as it was well taken care of and in good condition, it can be a good buy. See below @2:44 by respected Master Mechanic The Car Wizard:
