Hey Scottie:
i have a 2016 Ford F-150, 2.7L Ecoboost. I have seen where a few Ford technicians have strongly suggested that an oil catch can be installed in order to avoid carbon build up in the intake manifold. What is your take on this? Ford reportedly has no recommended procedure on what to do if a carbon build-up does occur.
Yes, catch cans greatly reduce carbon build-up on intake valves, especially on direct injected engines. I would definitely install one if they are recommending one. If you happen to have carbon build-up, then you have to walnut blast all the valve chambers to clean it up (a mechanic's job). It's advised to do this every 50,000 miles. My brother has an oil catch can installed on his 2016 Dodge Challenger Scatpack, and the amount of oil it catches is unbelievable! They actually work.
