[Solved] Is it worth it to change transmission fluid at 200K?

I have a 2001 Honda Accord 4 cylinder, automatic with 202,351 miles. The car-fax report shows it being serviced at Honda dealers for it's entire life (both owners before me). Regular oil changes, and transmission fluid at 100,000 miles. Normal service type things other than that. Honda did charge for a flush?

It shifts fine, but does occasionally bump when shifting out of second into third.

I have watched Scotties channel enough to know he cautions against changing fluid in a neglected automatic. Does mine fall into that category where clean fluid might make it slip and I should just leave it alone?

See here for further guidance, if you’re feeling brave.

I would say it's gone too long and leave it alone. 100k miles between services is a stretch as you usually want to do a drain and fill every 5 years/60k miles. You may check the fluid to see if you smell anything burnt or if it has gone black.

Dip stick is red with some particles. Was underneath the other day and saw a reddish drip on bottom passenger side.( so far I have not seen any drips on the floor, so it is a slow leak for now).
I am keeping a close watch on fluid level.

You only should be doing it if its having serious problems, or if it starts having later on, in which case you would keep the old one but try with a new one. If it gets even worse, swap it back to the old one...

In your case, leave it alone. Check the condition, we have a article on in it in the FAQ.

Honda does not flush transmissions. In fact they sent out a TSB telling dealerships that flushing would void warranties.

Generally, Honda dealerships perform a double drain-and-fill.

One of the problems with infrequent tranny service is that the additives that keep the seals pliable deplete. So, I'm not surprised by the leaks.

Thanks for the reply, You are quite correct, I misread the report, on the day Honda Dealer changed tranny fluid they flushed the brake system! They did not flush the transmission. 🙁

Honda transmissions don't have the issue of shedding clutch debris like the American transmissions. If the fluid is still red in colour you should be good to do a drain and fill.
