I will be taking my company car for a 1700 mile trip.
It's a 2019 Ram pickup with a 5.7 HEMI and it's got 165,000 miles.
It is bad for a car to put heavy mileage on in a short period of time?
Just wondering.
Truck drives several hundreds of miles each day.
That's a pretty long trip, but it shouldn't matter. Automobiles were built for driving, and it doesn't matter if you go 100 miles or 10,000 miles. Theoretically (if you could keep it refueled and parts didn't wear out) it should be able to go forever, non-stop. They don't really need to "rest".
In fact, highway driving (long trips at high speed) is good for an engine. It will clean out all the old cobwebs. Certainly much better for it than stop-and-go city driving.
The thing about long trips like that, is that they tend to exacerbate certain lingering issues you might have, so make sure the vehicle is in good repair. Make sure tires are well balanced and in good shape. Bearings, suspension, steering, etc. Make sure the charging system is good. I think Scotty has a video about preparing a car for a long trip. Make sure you have all your emergency gear and it's in good condition. Spare tire, jack etc. And be prepared for the worst, especially if you're going somewhere remote. My neighbors kid was trapped after a landslide took out the highway and they had to be rescued by the military in foggy conditions. It took a while.
Finally, it's a company vehicle, so wear and tear is normal, right.
I think OP was asking about the 165,000 miles in ~4yrs part.
Oh I see. 40k a year is heavy. It just means accelerated wear on everything. If you're worried then have a mechanic inspect it for whatever it needs.
IMHO, generally speaking, it depends on the driving habits and maintenance. If driving is mostly freeway and your drive moderately, and the car has been well maintained, it should be fine.
If it is mostly city driving or you drive like a maniac, not so fine. If the car isn’t maintained, not so fine either.
