Hey Scotty, I just picked up a 2007 Honda Civic si and I am falling in love with it. You helped me lean towards Honda a lot haha and away from Pontiac. I just wanna make sure I didn’t get a crappy buy. It’s got 190k a great car fax report and it was used at alot for 6k. I’ve taken it to several people saying I got a good deal what do you think and do you recommend any extra maintenance besides the usual fluid changes and tune up?
$6k for a 15 year old car from a used car dealer and 190,000 miles doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Keep up the maintenance and hope for the best.
Congrats for the new ride.
do you recommend any extra maintenance besides the usual fluid changes and tune up?
Follow the owner's manual regarding the maintenance. There is no need to tune up for that car.
Before the market got so out of whack I'd say you overpaid for a car of that age and mileage but these days it sounds like you did OK if it's in good condition. Just follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, except for fluids that they may claim are "liftetime". (There is no such thing.)
If it checks out, it should be a good buy. Iirc, it has the Honda K engine, with the timing chain and not belt. So one less thing to worry about.
Id say look over all the fluids to make sure they have the right amount & look good. Keep a close eye on both the coolant and oil levels to make sure its not losing any (dont check coolant if engines warmed up, youll get burned badly). Most modern cars dont really need tunes ups with all the computers they have. With that being said buying a relatively cheap scanner to look into that cars computer to see how its running could give you better insight on how its performing, but definitely isn't necessary unless there's a problem. Is this thing auto or manual?
Also ive heard scotty mention those carfax reports aren't always accurate, but if the car tracks down the road alright & none of the suspension components (or frame) look bent then it problem wasn't in a crash, or alteast not a serious one. Though if it pulls one way or another it could just be alignment. Other indicators of a minor crash at some point could be if you look at the inside of the fenders from underneath the hood, you might see some mismatched paint/ body work or something. Im not doing a great job describing it, but its one of the places I looked when I bought my car a few years back.
Hondas make good cars, if it runs/ drives alright & doesnt consume oil or anything, can you expect to keep it for awhile with good maintenance.
