I’m trying to figure out whether the 2016 cx5 transmission is a Jaco transmission and overall is it a good suv?
On the topic of a transmission brand being "good" or "bad",
both the worst manual transmission (GETRAG MT-82 on the mustang) and one of the best ones (GETRAG 233 on the GT-R and Supra) both were made by GETRAG.
Another example of how you can't judge a product by the brand, is the excellent transmision BMW M-series 7 speed, and the horrid Ford Focus 6 speed dual clutch were both made at the same time by the same company and they're both even part of the product line.
The 9 speed in Honda and Fiats (9ZF series) exploding before 100k miles, was made by the same company that makes the excellent (8ZF series) automatics for the Dodge Demon, Rolls Royce Phantom and many more. (Also intrestingly ZF makes the automated manual named "LADA AMT" and it's a buggy transmission although still better then the "Toyota MMT")
I can give you probably another 100 examples of this, but now back to the topic of Jatco:
Same goes for JATCO, if you've been into cars you probably remember the JR507E from the Skyline, the JR405E from the RX-8 and many other excellent transmissions. Personally I've been recently driving in a car powered by a modern Jatco CVT (2020 Renault Koleos) and they have improved significantly, drove well and reliability is alright.
Mazda have sold off Jatco about 20 years ago, So that CX-5 has either a mediocre Aisin (TG-80SC - the ones that used to blow up very prematurely on volvo) or a well built MAZDA SkyDrive unit.
Know that does not use a jetco transmission Mazda actually does their own in-house transmission work and since they share with Toyota some have an Aisian transmission
I personally have a cx5. I have never had a problem with it and there are no major problems associated with the vehicle.
That’s Mazda’s own transmission design (Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed conventional automatic) and has proven itself, which is to say it’s quite good. The vehicle itself is good and I can recommend it (Grand Touring if I am not mistaken includes the 2.5L naturally aspirated I4 which is an excellent combo with that 6-speed AT). There were still some issues to be aware of:
