Is the transmission Dying ?

Hi Scotty,

One of a friends have an Envoy. He is using the car for a year now. 2008 with 173000 Km. Never changed the Trans oil. He had a leak but fixed it and refilled with Trans fluid.

However when he engages the gear, there is always a 1.5 second delay for the gear to get engaged.

Is the transmission blowing out? Rebuilt or get rid of the car?

Delayed shifting is often caused by valves sticking the valve body, which prevents shifts from happening when they should. On newer cars, which control shifts using a computer, the problem could lie in the shift solenoids that are used to trigger shifts. If this is the case, these components of the transmission will likely need to be serviced or replaced. If the problem lies in the computer itself, then a reconfiguring of the computer is likely all that is necessary. Automatic transmissions also contain spring-loaded dampeners, called accumulators, which ensure that shifts happen gently. If the car suddenly jerks or slams into gear, for example the reverse of delayed shifting occurs, then the accumulators are likely to blame. Though I wish you good luck! Let us know how the repairs go, and health of the transmission.

Kind Regards,

Nathaniel J.

Anytime you change transmission fluid especially on something older you want to keep the oil fluid. This way you can put the old fluid back in if slipping or other issues start to happen. Sounds like the new fluid is causing slipping.

Did your friend use OEM fluid.

Yes. He put OEM fluid . He did not use any trans fix fluid. He could not find the leak until he took it for service by which nearly half fluid had come out.

Once its in gear how does it drive? When he tries to accelerate hard does the car actually go or do the rpms just go up with little acceleration? (that's slipping) I know these things arent fast but you still should be able to tell the difference. If not, I believe they're experiencing a symptom of a bad solenoid.

If it turns out to be an expensive repair, maybe its the end of the car. 14 years is a good run for one of those.

Its been shifting ok except gear 1-2 which creates a small jerk.

Yeah like NissanRob88 said above. It’s not a smart idea to change the transmission fluid at higher mileage (above 100K miles). In theory it sounds like a great idea, oh I’m going to put new shiny red transmission fluid in. Though In actuality if you tear down a transmission you know that a transmission operates off friction. With transmission fluid when it’s new, it’s slippery and has the correct amount of friction needed, deemed via car company. Though overtime that fluid becomes dirty, from dirty components and metal shaving(s) chipping off. Therefore making more friction. Then with that dirty fluid it breaks down more metal shavings, making the transmission needing more friction in order to shift properly, and overtime deteriorating until the point of failure of the transmission. In your friends case he had ~105633mi on it. So your friends vehicle had 106K miles of wear and tear on that transmission and metal shavings being torn off. So when you replaced it with new slippery red transmission fluid, that had very little friction. It makes the gears harder to come in contact. Therefore making the transmission slip from little friction imposed in the transmission. So I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you didn’t keep the old transmission fluid. It’s time to either just drive it, until the transmission breaks or the vehicle becomes incapable of driving, or in the extreme case if your friend doesn’t mind, have your transmission rebuilt or buy a new(ish) one and have it installed by a professional mechanic. I hope everything goes well!

Kind Regards,

Nathaniel J.

DISCARD THIS INFORMATION ABOVE, I DID NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND YOUR STATEMENT GIVEN.

Don't post in all caps please.

Delayed engagement has nothing to do with slipping or clutches.

The transmission is simply wearing out. Get a quote for a replacement.

You’re correct. I’m sorry, I didn’t read the information very well. I believe I added to what you have said below! @mmj

That was what he was also thinking. However, a junkyard transmission, would it be a gamble ?

yes
