Is the '97 4runner a good teen's car?
too old. You can see the bumper is rusted right through. The frame is going to be in sad shape.
I'd pass. If the rust I can see didn't make me pass, the rust I can't see definitely would.
i know i'll look at a different model. Thanks for replying.
You're welcome!
No, of course not. If it doesn't have Electronic Stability Control odds are you'll roll it over and its a 24 year old car look for something newer. Also, it probably doesn't even have the basics like side airbags etc. safety is key.
The RAV4 was a good choice for an SUV, but you might want to consider a sedan for the price range I mean you could get a much newer Corolla.
don't drive like an idiot and you won't roll over. Don't rely on electronic gadgets.
Safety should be your priority. A 4runner can last forever. First of all its all rusted so this particular one isn't a good buy. Next, safety has evolved so much since then, and even then the 4runner scored poorly. The governmet gave the rollover score (both AWD and FWD) a rating of 2 stars out of 5 for 2002 standards, and 3 stars in the frontal impact passenger side for 1997 standards.
The side impact got 5 stars for 2002 (1997 not tested) but this what 5 stars looks like:
If I were you I'd value your life a bit more and get something newer. Also, 24 year old cars may have all kinds of issues.
@mountainmanjoe
Emergency situations? In an emergency situation ESC helps a lot. Even if you are the best driver on earth others could cause you to crash as well. Personally, it isn't a risk I would take but just wanted to put that information out there so he could decide.
BTW NHTSA standards are that 2 star rollover rating means that (newer standards are more strict keep that in mind) that in a simulating emergency lane change, the vehicle has a 30-40% chance of rolling over.
Hope this helps!
In that case you should put on a helmet before leaving the house for those EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. If you can't change lanes without rolling your car, then you shouldn't be setting foot anywhere near a car.
I think @end got what I was meaning, which definetly wasn't that he can't drive a vehicle without rolling it over. Its not my data its the federal governments. I guess wearing that helmet is a good idea in a 4runner though {black}:formalsmile: Any helmet brand suggestions? Anyways, theres my info, hope it helps End.
My name is actually Endrit. Thanks for the information, though. I'm just the type of person who can't decide what car he wants and finds new ones everyday. I guess I should just stick to the Rav4 I wanted. The 4runner was just cheap so that's why.
@kerem and that exactly illustrates the problem with repeating what you see on websites, without critical thinking or life experience.
@mountainmanjoe
?
"exactly illustrates the problem with repeating what you see on websites"
What do you mean exactly, I'm confused? What did I say that made you believe this here?
Those are really solid built SUVs. They can be great 1st cars, if they’re in good condition. It is 24 years old and in New York, it could be very rusty. You want to make sure the frame and everything is still solid and not rotten - looking at the rust on the bumper, that 4Runner may have more hiding underneath. Regardless of what the seller tells you, have a trusted mechanic thoroughly inspect it before you buy to make sure it actually is in good shape. If everything checks out, $2770 is a good price for a 4Runner with only 138K miles.
No, get a newer model, one that has not rusted yet. They were not as safe as they are now either.
