Hey Scotty,
How she goes?
I recently saw a 1993 GMC Sierra 3500 Dually with a 6.5L Turbo Diesel. The ol' girl has got 142,000KM on her and is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Buddy is asking CAD$10,000 for it, what are your thoughts? Are these trucks generally reliable? What are some of the things I should look out for? I'm gonna be using it for work and hauling.
Thanks!
Those older trucks are usually very dependable. And GM quality has always been better in the heavier trucks. Even today with the 1500 trucks pretty much equal to junk, the 3/4 ton trucks and bigger are just built better. If it's really clean and in good shape the book value is only about 5,000 US dollars for a 2WD regular cab truck with that mileage. 2WD Crew cab is about 6,500. Regular cab with 4WD about 7,000, and Crew Cab 4WD is around 8,500 US Bucks.
So 10K Canadian dollars is a little over 8100 US dollars. If its a crew cab and 4WD it's right on the money book wise. If it's 2WD crew cab offer 8000 CAD.
Will say though at that mileage it has a lot of life left to it. You'll probably have the body fall apart around you before you have engine or tranny issues.
That's not even broken in for a diesel. I see a lot of older diesels (all mfg's) still going strong. If it checks out with an inspection by your mechanic could be a nice truck. Big thing up in Canada, the big thing to watch out for is rust. If the frame has rot, don't even bother.
Calgary gets harsh winters, so I would pay attention to the body + undercarriage condition.
check this post

but for the price i have no idea check around see how much it cost in same condition
Is it just me or is the price ridiculous?
Everything is ridiculously expensive up here
10k CAD = 8,100 USD
it's a heavy duty 1 ton truck with big diesel engine and dual wheel axle, not a disposable sedan.
It would have retailed for around $70k
