I just bought a Toyota pickup. Those pre tacoma trucks. I submitted a question to Reddit about any maintenance I should start with and most of them recommend I change the timing chain. It’s a 22re 2.4L engine with 157k miles. Since it’s a chain and not a belt would you still recommend me changing it? I’m planning to keep this truck till the tires fall off. Thanks.

Are you getting any noise from the chain? A well designed timing chain system doesn't have a specified replacement interval, but whether it needs a new chain will depend on how it's been maintained over the last three decades.

Looks like quite a bit of disassembly is involved but it should be doable if one is handy with tools.

None at all. The engine sounds good for its age and for the miles. I’m new to the Toyota game so I’m trying to educate myself on how I can make this truck live a long time. I’ll probably give it a little longer until I change it. Thank you!

On my car there's a spec for maximum allowed chain stretch based on how extended the tensioner is. You might want to see if there's a similar specification for that engine.

Always good advise Chuck.

Chains rarely snap, but from what I've found that's an interference engine, so if the chain does snap the engine is toast. Considering the age its not a bad idea, its probably alittle stretched already. Considering you want to keep it forever, I'd do it. Its not an expensive job and it'll be a peace of mind thing. Also looks like those engines can run nearly forever so its worth the investment. I also saw something about changing the guides from plastic to metal, which is a good option imo.

Id do it.

Didn’t know about changing the plastic guides man. Thank you!
